Sema Tutam: Governor Sang, CS Soipan Tuya Inspect Multi Billion Kipchoge Keino Stadium Project in Kapsabet

The stadium, which is being developed with support from the national government and the Kenya Defense Forces, is expected to become one of the country’s premier sports facilities once complete.

Speaking during the inspection tour, Governor Sang said the project represents a transformative investment in sports development, youth empowerment, and the preservation of the region’s rich athletics heritage.

“Together with the Cabinet Secretary for Defense Hon. Soipan Tuya, we today inspected the progress of construction works at the ultra-modern Kipchoge Keino Stadium,” Sang stated.

He added that the facility will feature a World Athletics certified tartan track, a modern football pitch, state of the art training facilities, a media center, and expanded seating capacity designed to meet international standards.

The project is being implemented with the support of President William Ruto, whom Sang credited for prioritizing sports infrastructure development across the country.

The construction of the new stadium came after the controversial decision to convert the old Kipchoge Keino Stadium located near the Kapsabet Central Business District into a modern market. The move sparked intense debate at the time, with critics questioning whether the government would genuinely replace the demolished facility with a new world class stadium.

Many residents and sports stakeholders had expressed fears that Nandi County could permanently lose a key sporting ground that had hosted generations of athletes and football activities.

However, the ongoing works at the new site now appear to have eased some of those concerns, with visible progress being made on the massive sports complex.

The involvement of the Kenya Defense Forces in the construction has also drawn attention, as the military continues to play a major role in the development of sports infrastructure across the country. KDF has recently been involved in the building and renovation of several stadiums under the government’s broader plan to upgrade Kenya’s sporting facilities to international standards.

The new stadium is expected to further strengthen Nandi County’s reputation as the source of world class champions, especially given the county’s rich history in global athletics.

Once complete, the facility is likely to position Kapsabet and the wider North Rift region as a major destination for international athletics training camps, football tournaments, and sports development programs, while also creating economic opportunities for local businesses and youth.
