SYDNEY, Australia; Nandi Woman Representative Cynthia Muge has joined members of the Kenyan community in Sydney in mourning the tragic and mysterious death of Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, a Kenyan national who passed away under unexplained circumstances while at work in Australia.
Muge, who is currently on a five day official tour of Australia, met with the deceased's siblings, relatives and friends as they continue to seek answers regarding the circumstances surrounding Chebii's sudden death.
According to the legislator, the late Sheila Jepkorir Chebii died during her routine work in Sydney, with the cause of her death yet to be established. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan diaspora community in Australia and back home in Kenya, particularly in Nandi County. Uasin Gishu and Elgeiyo Marakwet counties where many residents have relatives working abroad.
"Earlier today, I condoled with the siblings and friends of the late Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, who tragically passed away under unexplained circumstances during her routine work in Sydney, Australia," Muge said in a statement.
She revealed that efforts are underway to ensure the matter receives the attention it deserves from both Australian and Kenyan authorities.
"As we offer comfort to the family, we have requested the authorities, through the Kenyan Embassy in Canberra, to expedite their investigations to provide clarity regarding the mystery surrounding her passing," she added.
The tragedy comes as Muge continues her engagement with Kenyans living in Australia as part of an extensive tour covering Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
The visit has largely focused on strengthening ties between Nandi County and members of the diaspora, many of whom contribute significantly to the local economy through remittances and investments.
During her engagements, Muge has been advocating for greater diaspora participation in development projects within Nandi County. She has encouraged Kenyans abroad to consider investing in sectors such as hospitality, real estate, retail business and other ventures capable of creating employment opportunities for local residents.
She recently noted that diaspora remittances have become Kenya's leading source of foreign exchange earnings, surpassing traditional exports such as tea, coffee and tourism.
Her Australian tour has therefore combined both economic discussions and community engagement, with the latest stop in Sydney taking a sombre turn following the death of Sheila Jepkorir Chebii.
As investigations continue, family members and friends are hoping authorities will establish the circumstances that led to her death and provide the answers they have been desperately seeking.
The Kenyan community in Australia has meanwhile rallied around the family, offering emotional support as they navigate one of the most difficult moments of their lives.
