From Must Go! To Kumi Bila Break! Why President William Ruto's second term is guaranteed

History shows Kenya has never had a one term president. President William Ruto seems determined not to be the first. After beating the odds in 2022 and taking power against a state backed opponent, he enters the 2027 race with both momentum and new challenges.

Ruto built his political brand as a fighter who never loses an election. From his first win as Eldoret North MP in 1997 to serving ten years as Deputy President, he has mastered survival in tough political battles. His 2022 victory, plus commanding majorities in both houses, cemented his place as a dominant force.

But the 2027 race will not be easy. Rising public pressure over taxes, unemployment and the economy is likely to shape his campaign.

Mount Kenya Question

A major test for Ruto is the Mount Kenya vote. His clash with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was later impeached, has shaken his grip on the region. Gachagua’s continued criticism could lock Ruto out of a vote rich area that was crucial in 2022.

To secure a second term, Ruto may have to build fresh alliances to replace this political setback.

Eyes on Western Kenya

Ruto is also tightening his hold on the Western region. Musalia Mudavadi as Prime Cabinet Secretary and Moses Wetangula as Speaker give him strong anchors in a politically influential bloc. Their support is expected to strengthen his reelection bid.

Boost from By Elections

Recent by election wins in Mbeere and Malava have lifted Ruto’s 2027 hopes. These victories in tough contests show that his broad based administration still commands significant support.

Meanwhile, ODM leaders appear ready to rethink their strategy after the passing of Raila Odinga, signalling fresh political realignments ahead of 2027.
