Uasin Gishu: Church elder charged with beating son to death in Eldoret

 A church elder in Uasin Gishu County has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly beating his 23-year-old son to death on August 21.

The accused, Paul Rugut, who has been in police custody for 14 days pending investigations into the murder incident, denied the charge.



Rugut was arraigned before Eldoret Principal Magistrate Caroline Wattimah who directed that he be released on a sh 500,000 bond with surety of a similar amount.

The charge against him stated that on August 21, 2023, at Kapyemit location in Turbo Subcounty, he unlawfully killed his son Vincent Kimutai Bett.

Following the events leading to the incident, the prosecution charged him with offence of manslaughter contrary to section 202 as read with section 205 of the penal code.Rugut had earlier pleaded with the court to release him on lenient bond terms to enable him to take care of his children at home.

“The deceased is my son and as I speak now his siblings are at home waiting for me to fend for them. Some of my children are at home due to school fees, and I kindly plead with you to consider releasing me on lenient bond terms,” pleaded Rugut.

The case will be mentioned on September 26 for further directions on pre-trial.

On the day the incident took place, the deceased is said to have stormed into his parent's bedroom where he rudely shook his father to wake up as he lifted and pulled the bed away.

A war of words then ensued between the two and escalated into a physical confrontation whereupon the church elder hit his son with an elastic stroke before he escaped from the house with serious injuries.

However, the following day in the morning his lifeless body was found near their home.

The body was collected by police officers from Baharini police station who took it to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem
