Kapsabet, Nandi County; Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has defended his leadership record, citing major improvements in the county’s health and agriculture sectors during his nearly ten years in office.

Speaking at a recent event within the county, the governor expressed confidence in his administration’s achievements, particularly in transforming healthcare services that were previously inaccessible to many residents.

Sang noted that Nandi residents no longer need to travel to Eldoret for specialized medical services such as dialysis, CT scans, MRI scans, and cancer treatment. According to him, these services are now available at the county referral hospital, marking a significant milestone in improving healthcare access.

He further revealed that his administration is in the process of equipping a newly constructed Mother and Child Hospital. The facility, with a 350-bed capacity, is expected to stand as one of his key legacy projects once fully operational.

Focus on Agriculture Development

In the agriculture sector, Governor Sang highlighted progress made through the establishment of a modern poultry processing facility. The bird abattoir, he said, has the capacity to process more than 500 birds per hour.

However, the governor admitted that the facility remains underutilized due to low poultry production among local farmers. To address this challenge, he announced plans to establish an animal feed processing factory aimed at reducing the high cost of feeds, which has been a major barrier to increased production.

Senate Health Committee Raises Concerns

The governor’s remarks come just days after a Senate Health Committee delegation, led by Jackson Mandago, toured several health facilities in the county, including Meteitei Level Four Hospital, Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital, and Kapsabet Referral Hospital.

The committee reportedly found the state of the facilities concerning, citing challenges in service delivery and infrastructure.

In a separate statement, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized the county administration, accusing it of neglecting the health sector. In a post shared on his Facebook page, Cherargei pointed to poor sanitation, inadequate medical supplies, and a general decline in service delivery across public health facilities.

Political Tensions Persist

The criticism adds to the long-standing political differences between Governor Sang and Senator Cherargei, whose relationship has remained strained since Sang assumed office in 2017.

As debate over the state of healthcare in Nandi continues, residents are likely to closely monitor both the county government’s response and the implementation of proposed reforms in the sector.
