Bodaboda operators in Kapkilel Centre, Nandi County, are up in arms after a shelter they had built to protect themselves from the elements was suddenly pulled down.
The makeshift shed, which had a grass-thatched roof and wooden posts, was put up by the riders themselves. Each of them had chipped in Ksh 30 to buy the materials, hoping to create a resting spot that would shield them from Nandi’s frequent sun and rain.
But their efforts seem to have rubbed some people the wrong way.
The shelter didn’t sit well with some area leaders, who allegedly ordered its removal, leaving the operators exposed once again. While no official reason has been given for the demolition, the riders believe the directive came from the county leadership, whom they now blame for what they call an unfair and disrespectful move.
“We were just trying to help ourselves,” said one of the riders. “No one gave us anything—we built it with our own money. Now they’ve brought it down like it meant nothing.”
The incident has sparked frustration among the operators, who say they feel neglected and unheard, despite being a vital part of the local transport economy.
As of now, the bodaboda riders are calling on the county government to explain why their shelter was removed—and to help provide a better, more permanent solution.
