Nandi: Youth urged to embrace technical courses to curb unemployment

Youth in Nandi have been urged to embrace technical courses to better their skills for the job market.

Speaking at an event held on Friday 2nd July, at Solomon's gardens in Nandi County, Arise Nandi Empowerment Initiative CEO, Miss Maureen Maritim urged the young form four leavers to focus on courses that would render them self employed.

"We all know that there are limited job opportunities in this country, I therefore urge you to focus on technical courses that would see you get self employed once you clear school." She said.

The event which was well attended by young form four leavers was meant to sensitize and mentor them by ensuring that the young graduates are equipped with skills and knowledge on what to pursue in their post secondary education.

Organizers of the event wanted to talk to the young form four leavers on career selection, talent nurturing, skills development and the job market dynamics.

Also present in the meeting was The Nandi county Speaker, Joshua Kiptoo who also voiced his concerns on the state of joblessness in the country.

"We have given this young men and women the reality that there are no jobs in our country. We have asked them to embrace technical courses which will lead to self employment." Said the speaker.

The speaker also called on the strengthening of the Health and Agricultural sectors to spur the growth of employment in the country.

"If we invest heavily in Agriculture and Health sectors, then it means we give space for growth of the economy and therefore increased availability of jobs." Said the speaker.

Kilibwoni member of County Assembly Hon. Cynthia Muge who was also present at the function stated that the country was not in any position to offer employment to the youth and stressed the need for the youth to find new ways of creating employment.

"Everyone is aware that there are no jobs in the country. It is therefore imperative that the youth find ways to create the jobs themselves. Through technical courses, they can be able to be self employed and further create opportunities for fellow youth." She said.

The Arise Nandi Empowerment Initiative has been at the forefront in ensuring that youth are mentored and given the platform to succeed in their careers.

Institutions present during the function included; Kaiboi Technical Institute, Koitalel Samoei University, Mosoriot KMTC, First Choice Recruitment and Consultancy for jobs abroad and Cheptarit Vocational Training College.
