DPP Approves 16 Murder Charges Against Students in Utumishi Girls Academy Arson Tragedy
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved murder charges against students implicated in the deadly arson incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County that claimed the lives of 16 people.
In a press statement issued on June 23, 2026, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that the office had received and reviewed a preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding the tragic fire that occurred on May 28, 2026.
Following an assessment of the evidence gathered during investigations, the DPP approved charges against the implicated students. The suspects will face sixteen counts of murder arising from the incident.
The decision marks a significant development in one of the country's most devastating school fire tragedies in recent years and signals the beginning of formal criminal proceedings against those accused of involvement.
The DPP also expressed concern over the increasing number of arson incidents and related acts of criminal conduct reported in educational institutions across the country. The office warned that individuals found culpable for such offences would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
"The suspects will face sixteen counts of murder arising from the incident," the statement said.
The prosecution authority urged students and members of the public to refrain from engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing that investigations and prosecutions would continue wherever evidence establishes wrongdoing.
At the same time, the DPP extended condolences to the families, friends, and the entire school community affected by the tragedy. The office reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice through a fair, impartial, and evidence-based prosecution process.
The ODPP further reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the rule of law, protecting the public interest, promoting the administration of justice, and ensuring accountability where criminal conduct is established through investigations.
The Utumishi Girls Academy fire shocked the nation and renewed concerns about safety, discipline, and security within learning institutions. As the case moves to court, attention is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the fire and the evidence linking the accused students to the incident.
The prosecution of the suspects is expected to proceed in the coming weeks as the criminal justice process gets underway.
