Politics: Raila, Ruto in rare show of solidarity

ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto have in a rare show of solidarity condemned the police for harassing senators.

Through statements on their social media handles, the two leaders accused the police of being misused.

Dp Ruto said that it was Wrong, Very wrong for police to be used to blackmail the senate. In a tweet, the DP first lauded the decision by the senate to form a bipartisan committee to build a win win consensus, he then condemned what he termed as the abuse of police and criminal justice to bully citizens, threaten and intimidate leaders.

Here is the tweet by the DP;

Raila Odinga

On his part, Raila termed the arrests of the senators as an unfortunate happening.

"The events surrounding the arrest of senators yesterday stand as a stark reminder that our struggle for a democratic state is far from finished." Read part of a statement by Mr. Odinga.

Over the past few days, Senators have failed to agree on a formula that would be used to share revenue among the 47 counties. The stalemate has persisted with each side taking a grand position making it hard for the two sides to come to an agreement.

The government side is pushing for a formular that is based on the population of a county. The other side christened "Team Kenya" is opposed to the formula on the grounds that marginalised counties will be losing on revenue.

Yesterday, the Senators finally agreed to the formation of a committee that will iron out contentious issues and come up with a formula that is acceptable to all.
