President Kenyatta Joins African Leaders In Condemning Mali Coup

President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined other African heads of state in Condemning the Tuesday military coup in Mali which led to the seizure and detention of President Boubacar Keita by mutinying soldiers. 

Led by the African Union chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa, the leaders called for the immediate release of president Boubacar and senior members of his administration including the Prime Minister Boubou Cisśe.


Speaking during a virtual meeting of African Union Bureau convened to discuss the continental response to Covid-19, president Uhuru Kenyatta urged for a speedy, peaceful and democratic resolution of the crisis.

President Felix Tshisekedi of Democratic Republic of Congo called on his counterparts to take a firm stand against the coup which he said was dangerous for democracy.

In attendance also were representatives of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), African special envoys on Covid-19 and the director of Africa CDC Dr. John Nkengasong.

In his submission, Dr. Nkengasong informed the leaders that despite Africa having crossed the 1Million infection mark, the daily infection rates have reduced by over 37 percent in the last two weeks.

Dr. Nkengasong said seven vaccine trials were nearing completion in accordance to the World Health Organisation guidelines and that Kenya is among four African countries undertaking the trials.

President Kenyatta told the leaders to elevate their partnership in the search for a vaccine so that Africa will not be left behind in vaccination once the clinical trials are over.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique speaking on behalf of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), emphasized on the need to ensure that Africa is not left behind in the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine when ready.
