UDA Tensions Emerge as Sudi Targets Cherargei Over “Mole” Claims
Fresh signs of internal divisions within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have emerged after Oscar Sudi publicly accused Samson Cherargei of working in cahoots with allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The accusations follow a controversial front-page story by The Standard titled “Going after Uhuru,” which alleged sustained political intimidation against former President Uhuru Kenyatta under the administration of William Ruto.
In a strongly worded statement, Sudi dismissed both the publication and Cherargei’s perceived alignment with it, stating: “Cherargei and The Standard are one and the same. Don’t drag us into this nonsense, we know you’re colluding.”
The Standard newspaper article follows Sen. Cherargei's motion tabled in Parliament seeking to take away the privileges enjoyed by the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta accusing him of being active in politics and therefore should not enjoy the retirement perks accorded to him.
A Growing Political Undercurrent
Sudi’s remarks are likely to fuel speculation of widening cracks within UDA, particularly between factions perceived to be loyal to President Ruto and those seen as sympathetic to Gachagua’s political direction. While Cherargei has consistently positioned himself as a vocal defender of the Kenya Kwanza administration and the UDA agenda, Sudi’s allegations suggest that some within the party leadership may increasingly view his posture with suspicion.
The timing of the remarks is also significant. The Standard headline touches on the sensitive issue of former President Kenyatta’s treatment post-retirement, a topic that has quietly generated political tension within government circles and could be feeding into broader internal disagreements.
Implications for UDA Unity
This development most likely signals the early stages of factional realignment within UDA, particularly as the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape. Sudi, widely regarded as a close insider within President Ruto’s inner circle, rarely makes such direct public accusations without underlying political intent, which raises questions about whether deeper disagreements exist behind the scenes.
If these tensions persist, they could gradually erode cohesion within UDA ranks, heighten scrutiny on leaders perceived to have shifting loyalties, and reinforce narratives of an emerging divide between pro-Ruto and pro-Gachagua camps. At the same time, Cherargei’s reputation as a fierce and outspoken political figure suggests he is unlikely to retreat quietly, increasing the likelihood of further public exchanges.
Nandi’s Strategic Political Position
For Nandi County, the dispute places its two high-profile leaders, Sudi and Cherargei, on seemingly divergent paths, a development that carries political weight given the county’s importance as a stronghold of President Ruto’s support base. Any sustained fallout between the two could influence local political alignments, grassroots mobilization, and future electoral dynamics within the county.
Outlook
While it remains unclear whether the accusations are grounded in verifiable political coordination or are part of broader internal maneuvering, it is increasingly likely that UDA is entering a phase of internal contestation. If not carefully managed, these tensions could evolve into a more visible split within the ruling coalition, especially as competing power centers begin positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
For now, Sudi’s remarks have opened a new front in Kenya’s evolving political landscape, one that may extend beyond media narratives into the core of UDA’s internal stability.
