Members of a local WhatsApp group in Nandi Hills, Nandi County came together and donated money for a tree planting exercise along the Nandi Hills Awasi Road at a place referred as "Chepsangor".
The road stretch which has claimed quite a number of lives through road accidents, has been a thorn in the flesh fof locals.
On various occassions, accidents have aoccured in this stretch, prompting the members to act swiftly.

"We are planting trees along this stretch to not only conserve the environment but also ensure that once mature the trees can act as barriers, preventing motor vehicles from rolling down the steep slope." Said one of the members.

The Chepsangor stretch has been a notorious blackspot that has claimed numerous lives. Notable incidences include the March 11, 2014 accident in which 16 people were killed when a matatu ferrying people from Eldoret to Kisii lost control and rolled several times. According to witnesses, 10 people died on the spot, while 6, succumbed while undergoing treatment.
On 29th Dec 2018, 6 people were killed, while 10 more were seriously injured in an accident at the same spot. Amongst those killed was a young vibrant lady from Nandi Hills called Maximilla Chemutai, who was by the road awaiting to board a matatu.
On September 11 2019, two people died when a matatu they were travelling in from Eldoret where they had attended a passing out parade at the Eldoret Military Training College lost control at the same spot.
On March 11, 2020, five people died and 10 more were injured when a matatu they were in lost control and rolled 200 metres down the steep slopes before landing in a stream.

The residents were joined by Tinderet MP Hon Julius Melly who lauded the initiative as a move in the right direction. He also made an assurance that he will support such initiatives aimed at making the Nandi Hills- Chemelil road safe.

Hon. Melly initiated a tree planting drive in his Tinderet Constituency back in June of this year. The program was rolled out in all the locations in his area of jurisdiction.
