Over 400 contracted health workers could be rendered jobless after the Nandi County Government failed to honor its contractual agreements. According to the Star newspaper, the county has laid off the 400 contracted employees over ballooning wagebill.
A notice issued by the Kapsabet referral hospital superintendent Daniel Kemboi, affected Clerks, cleaners guards and other support staff.
The workers through their representative Janet Kirwa accused the health CEC of being arrogant and that she had ignored their plight. According to Jane, the county owes the employees more than Ksh. 25 Million shillings in wages.
Ballooning wage bill
The county has a recurrent expenditure of around 52% of the total budget, a workforce of about 5100 employees. 1652 employees are employed on a permanent basis while 3455 are on contractual terms.
Since governor Stephen Sang took office in 2017, about 210 employees have been employed on permanent terms while 2,266 are on contract. The county spends a total of Ksh. 310 Million per month on wages, this is according to reports tabled at the county assembly.

Legal redress
The workers have vowed to take the county to court. According to Jane Kirwa, the employees have sought the services of a lawyer to fight their case at the Employment and Labor Relations Court.
