World record holder Kelvin Kiptum, coach die in a grisly road accident

World Marathon holder Kelvin Kiptum has gone to be with the Lord!

The reknown athlete was driving a Toyota Premio when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road.

With him were two passenger his Rwandese coach Garvais Hakizimana who also lost his life and a lady passenger called Sharon Kosgey who escaped death with serious injuries and was rushed to Racecourse Hospital for medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased are lying in Racecourse Hospital Mortuary.The vehicle was badly damaged and was towered to Kaptagat Police Station.What a sad night to Kenya and the athletic world.

Athletics Kenya has since mourned the death of the record world holder and his coach saying:

"Athletics Kenya is deeply saddened to announce the passing on of the World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana. Our condolences go out to their families and the entire athletics community during this difficult time."

Kiptum broke Eliud Kipchoge's world record in Chicago last October, running 26.1 miles in two hours and 35 seconds.

Kiptum was planning to run a less two hour race soon and was among the chosen to represent team Kenya in the next olympic games.

Recently, his World record was ratified by the global athletic body.

Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics has mourned Kiptum and described Kiptum as "an incredible athlete".

"We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss. On behalf of all World Athletics we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation," Coe said in a statement on X platform.
