The Judicial Service Commission is on a task to select the next Chief Justice replacing retired Chief Justice David Maraga who left office on January 11, 2021 after serving for 5 years .
CJ Maraga handed over the instruments of power to Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu who is now the acting Chief Justice of Kenya at the steps of the Supreme Court building until a substantive Chief Justice is appointed.
The position of the Chief Justice is open to the serving members of Judiciary and those from outside.
The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee is yet to advertise the position and also issue recruitment guidelines .
The current members to interview and nominate the next Chief Justice include Ndungu Mwilu representing Supreme Court, Justice Mohammed Warsame, Court of Appeal, David Majanja of the High Court, Attoney General Kihara Kariuki, Macharia Njeru and Mercy Deche both representing the Law Society of Kenya, Magistrate Emily Ominde and Olive Mugenda representing the public.
According to the President Of the Law Society of Kenya, Nelson Havi, those being lauded as possible candidates to replace David Maraga must have the courage to take on the executive and defend judicial independence with zeal.
Maraga will be remembered as the first CJ that led the majority decision in the Supreme Court to nullify the 2017 August elections.
