Is William Ruto reaching out to Raila, Mudavadi?

In politics they say, nothing happens by chance. If this is something to go by, then recent happenings would have to raise political eyebrows.

William Ruto is without doubt a fierce politician. Since he joined the National Assembly back in 1997, he has never been defeated in his quest for any political seat. The only time he was floored was during the 2010 constitutional referendum where he chose to oppose the changes.

Fast forward to 2020, it seems he doesn't want what happened in 2010 repeat itself. Being a top contender in the quest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto who currently seems like a lone ranger, is leaving nothing to chance.

There has been talk that he is reaching out to seasoned politicians with the aim of forming coalitions in preparation for the presidency.

A few weeks ago, talks emerged that one of Ruto's mouthpiece, Oscar Kipchumba Sudi had met with ODM leader Raila Odinga and had lunch together at a city restaurant. Though this might seem as a small inconsequential story, there could actually be some political undertones within it.

The purge by President Kenyatta that has seen some of Ruto's close allies swept away from powerful house leadership positions have been met with total silence from Dr. Ruto raising the questions of what exactly he is up to.

Recently, Ruto made an appearance in public together with one of his confidants Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago while visiting the family of the late Hon. Peter Kiilu. Two days later, governor Mandago visited ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi at the Musalia Mudavadi centre which has been abuzz with activities recently.

Whether the meeting was planned or not is not an issue. The fact that they met is itself reason enough to arouse suspicions of ongoing talks.

Despite the ongoing political realignments being experienced in the country, Musalia has maintained a rather neutral stand. He has insisted that his party, Amani National Congress (ANC) is not about to team up with Jubilee party insisting that the coalition agreement they signed to join NASA still stands.

In what has served to further fuel the speculation of ongoing talks between Ruto and Musalia, the latter met with one of Ruto's soldiers; Sirisia Mp. John Waluke, a day after he met with governor Mandago.

Most people view Mr. Mudavadi as a neutral "safe" bet. Prior to the 2013 general elections, it is believed that Musalia had been pin pointed to be the flag bearer in the coalition between TNA and URP before President Kenyatta made an about turn leading to a fallout that saw Musalia work with Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.

With a looming referendum in the horizons, there's a possibility that more seats will be set aside to cater for top leadership. However, Ruto's allies have been adamant about this possibility, claiming that some leaders were hell bent on ensuring that they water down the precidency or altogether lock down Ruto from the top seat.

Mr. Ruto, is seen as a front runner for the presidency despite the challenges facing his ambitions. Time is quickly running out and everyone is making political moves Covid-19 notwithstanding.
