The DCI today spoke to the media saying that they were looking into close to 100 cases related to the 2007/2008 post election violence in which a number of Kenyans lost their lives and property.
According to the governor, he said that he wasn't aware of any people from his county who had been threatened or whose properties had been forcefully occupied.
Here is the statement by the governor;
My attention has been drawn to a statement made by the Director of Criminal Investigation Mr George Kinoti on re-opening of the Post-election violence cases. First, I wish to reiterate our commitment to peace, cohesion and offer unwavering support towards the government’s quest for justice to all.
I am however deeply concerned by the approach and tone taken by the DCI in his quest to deliver justice for all. As one of the leaders from this region, I wish to state that we have consistently preached peace, cohesion and condemned any form of politically instigated violence and all manner of crime.
We have consistently been sending “NEVER- AGAIN” messages to our constituents thus there has been no violence or tension in the region for the last 10 years. I also wish to state that we have not seen or heard any activity or discussions that would indicate a possible recurrence of any violence politically or otherwise now or in the future as the DCI has alleged.
We take great exception that the DCI has either deliberately or metaphorically stated that “there are some people walking and dancing on the graves of PEV victims with glee”. Of equal concern is the fact that Mr Kinoti has alleged that there are families who were robbed of their rightful home and property and have since never returned to their homes.
We wish to welcome the DCI to visit this region and confirm that those who were displaced have since either returned to their homes or voluntarily opted to sell their land and relocate to other parts of the country.
As we saw in 2009 President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto under the patronage of The Late Bishop Cornelius Arap Korir, lead a re-unification and return-home campaign for all victims of PEV. This was fully supported by the local community and the church.
I urge residents of North Rift and the larger Rift Valley to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities at their locality. We shall never allow anyone to joke around the peace we have built for very long. If there are genuine reports about individuals under any manner of threat, we will support the DCI to look for justice.
We shall remain in peace and reject any effort by anyone to create tension among the communities living in Uasin Gishu County and the entire North Rift region.
