Two governors from bordering counties of Nandi and Kisumu have proposed joint investments to bring to an end the perennial conflicts bedevilling their two counties.
Governors Sang (Nandi) and Anyang Nyong'o (Kisumu) who spoke during a consultative peace meeting organised by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) at Acacia Premier Hotel in Kisumu on Thursday said that development of shared infrastructure would help unite their communities living along the border.
Governor Sang said the revitalization of sugar mills such as Miwani, Chemelil and Muhoroni will create opportunities for the communities at the border.
He also rooted for increased allocation to the two counties to enable them undertake joint investments and fund peace initiatives.
Governor Nyong'o on his part said roads, markets, schools and other social amenities will help bring the communities together.
He noted that conflict is an abnormality that requires collective responsibility.
He cited the current conflict between the Kisumu county government and Kericho at Sondu over collection of revenue due to boundary disputes.
"We have a problem at Sondu and we have engaged the national government through commissioners of the two counties. We believe a permanent solution will be found." He said.
NCIC commissioners Philip Okundi and Sam Kona who attended the meeting said the commission is working with other stakeholders towards peace building initiatives along Nandi-Kisumu, Kakamega-Nandi and Kisumu-Kericho borders.
