A bridge at the Chepkiit Waterfalls in Nandi
A few weeks ago, the Chepkiit waterfalls, one of the tourist sites in Nandi was back in the limelight. This time round a lady, who was on a picnic at the place was involved in an accident, lost her life and the body couldn't be retrieved for more than a week.
What is appalling is that this wasn't the first case. There have been several cases reported in the place. Each time, locals have called on the county government of Nandi to enhance the security around the scenic waterfalls.
Throughout the period, the county government has done little to remedy the cases, causing more deaths to innocent tourists.
CHEPKIIT MENACE!
It is time we dealt with this matter once and for all.
In the 2018/2019 budget, the development of Chepkiit tourism site was allocated Ksh. 18 Million. This is according to documents that I'm privy to.
Ksh. 3.47 Million was allocated to the construction of an ablution block which is now operational.
Ksh. 3.8Million was allocated for the construction of a pit latrine and an educational center. The pit latrine is complete while the center is yet to take off.
2.6 Million was set aside for the installation of a water tank, renovation of watch tower and footbridges. All these have been completed.
1Million was set aside for fencing. Phase one is complete, phase two is yet to commence.
1.64 Million was allocated for the construction of a gate and ticketing offices.
3.2M was allocated for the construction of guard rails. The project is yet to commence two years down the line.
My question to the county government of Nandi is, for how long should we wait for installation of these guard rails? How many lives have to be lost so that you can finally act?
From the pictures attached, do you think the bridge is safe enough for the people? Isn't this dangerous to the tourists?
We are calling upon the county government of Nandi to speed up the repairs at the falls before another life is lost.
