Story by; Kibor Michael

Chemori Self Help Group (SHG) is a registered entity under the ministry of Labour and social protection.

Members of the Chemori Self help group load a tractor with bricks

The Group is Located in Manman area in Kemeloi/Maraba Ward, Aldai sub-county. The SHG has a total of 70 members drawn from the same locality. They are currently seeking to transition to Community Based organization (CBO) because of their increasing number of members.

The group members hold meetings twice a week (Monday & Friday) at exactly 4PM. The level of discipline and punctuality is so encouraging.

To get revenue, the group also supplies buildimg material to locals

During these meetings, every member contributes Ksh. 20. Meaning they collect ksh.1400 (70members*20) in one session and a total of 2800/- in a week. Naturally a year is loaded with 52 weeks, which means at the end of the year the group collects 2800*52wks=145,600(before deductions & other expenses)

They also engage in table banking.

The money collected is strictly used for community development projects. They support needy students by paying school fees.

They have acquired a parcel of land that has a water spring (kungut) and they currently working on a water harvesting project that will see the entire location get clean piped water.

The group is also passionate on matters environmental conservation through planting of indigenous trees which is one of the mitigation measures of climate change.

For the record, majority of its members are the elderly. This group needs some little support, probably a patron to guide them especially on how to seek funding and how to manage programms effectively.
